Conference Theme:

Food and the Internet

The aim of the conference will be the phenomenon of food culture in the age of virtualization and the spread of computer technology. Nowadays food culture in the Western world is influenced by trans-cultural food knowledge, global marketing, and new behavioral patterns, eating habits, and ways with food. Thousands of food-related websites show that the Internet is a global cook-book, and our Internet habits reveal a lot about our food preferences in daily menus. There is also an enormous number of sites devoted to table manners; guides to drinks and wines; the aesthetics of food display; food tourism and restaurant reviews; healthy diets; the technicalities of food production, preservation, consumption; and self-sufficiency. The conference will be an opportunity to discuss the global character and influence of the Internet on the state of national, regional, and local culinary cultures.

We invite participants to present their research on “Food and the Internet” and we hope that an interdisciplinary approach will reveal a lot of important aspects of the conference theme.

General information

The 20th International Ethnological Food Research Conference will take place at the Training and Conference Centre University of Łodz , 16/18 Kopcińskiego Street, 90-232 Łódź , Poland [www.csk.uni.lodz.pl/en]. The conference will start on 3 September 2014 at 9:30 am and will end with a concluding meeting and the departure of delegates on the afternoon of 6 September 2014.
